SUE MUNSON
Mystical, Ethereal, and Spiritual are some of the words used by viewers when engaging with my paintings. I aim to evoke a feeling which connects the art, artist, and viewer through emotional responses, and the painted image.
Lockdown saw a shift in my thought process as I began to look back over sketches, and paintings from the early nineties which were spent exploring and experimenting in my studio. Finding peace in this newly rediscovered body of work I started to work on a larger scale, drawing on the wonderful memories of those early days spent painting in South Carolina on an Island I feel so privileged to have been part of.
My process involves working in layers, continually editing, and mark making until I achieve that elusive image which reminds me of a place once visited. Inspiration is also found in the faded grandeur of old buildings, and their frescoes, decaying yet still beautiful, and mystical memories of long forgotten landscapes.
I have exhibited in major open exhibitions including The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2014 2015 and 2017, The Royal West of England Academy open exhibitions plus contemporary galleries in the UK and USA.
I collaborate with Interior designers and galleries who are seeking paintings which will enhance, and bring together a clients vision. Most recently my work was showcased at the Designers Guild flagship store on the Kings Road. This Autumn (2023) I look forward to exhibiting at The Sewell Gallery Oxford.
